Luminar, photo editing software for people who love photography, announced a new generation of powerful editing tools designed to analyse the tone, atmosphere, style, and setting of the original photograph and apply edits that fit the photographer’s creative vision.
According to Luminar’s recent study on AI acceptance among photographers, more than half see AI as an important part of their editing routine – as long as they have control of the final result. Additionally, 73% prioritize a natural-looking image over technical perfection, and 76% have rejected or reduced an AI edit because it looked inauthentic.
Inspired by these findings, Luminar levels up its feature set to analyse the photographer’s original idea and retain it throughout the whole editing process – right to the final result. Scene-Aware Editing, a core part of the update, lets the tools understand a photo’s tones, light, depth, subject, faces, and the kind of scene it is. Built into the core of Luminar’s upgraded toolset, Scene-Aware Editing ensures each photograph gets unique editing that does not override, but amplifies the original idea.
The Printing feature and the whole feature set are designed with one goal in mind – to deliver photographs that retain the author’s message and are worth signing and hanging on the wall.
The core toolset of Luminar’s update:
Enhance: evaluates each image across eight different situations — exposure, color cast, sky type, highlight and halo risk, white-balance shift — and adapts its processing to that specific shot, with protection for highlights, color, skies, and skin.
Atmosphere: strengthens the atmosphere a scene already had, built as real 3D volumetric fog. Using the photograph’s original depth and light, fog settles along the ground, thins with height, warms toward the sun, and glows softly around street lamps and headlights.
Smart Compositions: understands the whole scene first — the main subject, faces and gaze direction, what draws the eye, and the type of scene — then tests many crops against classic principles.
AI Assistant: The user can describe the desired final result in a few words; the AI Assistant understands the creative intent and suggests what to adjust and where to stop, keeping the original idea intact.
Signature&Printing: Once a photograph looks exactly as the photographer envisioned it, they can add their signature and bring their finished work to the wall, shelf, or someone’s mailbox.
“Photographers have never wanted software that edits for them. We keep hearing from our users that while they love the fluency technology brings to editing, they would never trade their creative vision for it. That principle shaped this entire release: every tool now examines the photograph before it changes anything, so the result still belongs to the person who pressed the shutter. And by building printing directly into Luminar, we’re completing what it was always about — a photograph you’re proud enough to put on the wall.” — Ivan Kutanin, CEO of Skylum.
The Luminar Fall Update is available starting October 28, 2026, across desktop, web, and mobile. Through Black Friday (ending November 30, 2026), the update is available at the lowest price of the year: upgrades for existing Luminar users, and up to 77% off for new customers.
What’s next?
This release deepens a direction Skylum will keep building on: an editing experience, consistent across desktop, web, and mobile, that puts the photographer’s vision at center stage.
